"Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’” Luke 9:23 (NIV)

To follow Jesus closely means to denounce the worldly pleasures that once filled our time and attention. Following Jesus closely as one of His disciples also means we will not place anyone or anything else before Him. This means Jesus comes before our spouse, job, children, and other things we consider to be important. Jesus knows that we have other obligations but none of those obligations are more important than Him. When our worldly obligations seem to interfere with us following Jesus closely, we should be encouraged to pray and ask Jesus to refocus our minds and our attention back on Him. We cannot do this alone. The enemy will send distractions our way. This tactic is demonstrated throughout the Bible. Jesus’ disciples struggled with following Him even though they walked and witnessed His miracles and teachings for several years.
